BONJOURHI!
This site belongs to Emily Angharad Brown – a freelance illustrator and pet portrait artist based in Montréal, Canada.
Born and raised in the UK, I moved to Montréal in 2013 to carry out postdoctoral research in the biology department at McGill University. After a couple of years studying aquatic invasive species, it became apparent that my stay in Canada was going to be less temporary than expected - I became a successful invader (sorry Canada)!
I made the decision to study Zoology at a very young age, when I discovered this was what David Attenborough did. Alas my childhood dream of living amongst the elephants and lions didn’t come to fruition, but I am hugely grateful for the travel opportunities I had as a scientist. My PhD research took me to one of the most beautiful and bizarre places I have ever visited - the St Kilda archipelago in Scotland. I will always cherish the memories of running wildly around those damps grounds with a crook flailing ahead of me, attempting to capture deceptively fast lambs.
Since making the decision to leave academia, I have worked on a variety of projects, but right now I am concentrating most of my time on making illustrations, linocuts and pet portraits! While I am a self-taught artist, my scientific training and travel experience undoubtedly influence my work in a positive way. Recently I have been enjoying applying a scientific approach to my experiments in linocut printmaking! I love to create imaginative drawings inspired by nature, music, and the different places I have visited.
Please feel free to browse and to get in touch with any comments, questions or requests. I am available for commissions, whether a pet portrait or an illustration of your wildest imagination. I am always open to new challenges!
